The IECD Department strengthens the capacity of families and local community structures to support vulnerable children’s (particularly young girls’) access to quality, inclusive IECD services within their area. This is primarily done through group lessons and hands-on training. The focus areas include education, nutrition, health, early stimulation, care and protection. Global frameworks on ECD like the NCF are used with this department. The IECD Department is currently running two projects: Mtoto Mwerevu, or ASTUTE, which works to educate the community on how to care for babies and young children, and Boresha Afya, which works with health centers and workers to bring about changes in the overall health of women and children in the project area. The department is also working to phase in a new project, called Mapema Education Scheme, working to build pre-primary schools, educate Montessori teachers, and help parents have the means to send their children to preschool.
