A Fence's Encompassing Effect in Lwanhima

In the beginning of 2018, we were able to put up a fence around the ECD Community Center in Lwanhima by working together with community members from three neighborhoods: Nobola, Nyabahegi and Isebanda. This fence protects the children so that they can study in a safe and friendly environment. In addition, by working with the organization Tahea Mwanza, we were able to add a slide and 2 kinds of swings to the playground. These will help the children to enjoy school and to gain better understanding. In 2018, 83 children were registered at the community center (53 girls and 30 boys). None of the children are disabled. We also started and then strengthened child protection and safety committees in the three neighborhoods. They have already begun to follow the direction we gave by bringing to light different challenges that children under the age of eight have. The effect has been huge. The government was even able to bring in permanent teachers for this center.

The building of the ECD Community Center fence had another profound, completely unexpected effect on the community. After seeing how much they were able to do on their own, the community members started thinking about what else they could do… Which brought them to another, even bigger construction project. This project will be posted in a future success story!
